DESCRIPTION:The Best Dam Backyard Ultra starting on 9 May 2026 is a last one standing event based at Otematata Wetlands in Canterbury. \n\n\n\nA Backyard Ultra is a form of ultramarathon race where competitors must consecutively run a 6.7km course in less than one hour\, every hour. If a runner does not finish a lap within the hour they DNF (Did Not Finish). The race finishes when one person completes one more lap than anyone else. \n\n\n\nThe course is on well marked trails with minimal elevation gain and scenic views of wetlands\, Lake Aviemore and mountains. It is the same as the day loop used by the NZ team in the 2024 World Team Championship.

The race restarts each hour with all those that finished the previous lap on time. The race is over when only one runner remains to complete a lap. This runner is marked as the winner and only finisher\, with all other runners receiving a DNF (Did Not Finish). The strange distance is because the distance for 24 laps is equal to 100 miles.

SUMMARY:The Molesworth Run
DESCRIPTION:The Molesworth Station is New Zealand’s largest high country station and is located in the upper half of the South Island. \n\n\n\nOur 84 km ultra running event runs from the Molesworth Cob Cottage to Hanmer Springs through the Molesworth Station. The race can be done as a Solo-runner\, in a Team of 2 or in a Team of 4 runners. \n\n\n\nFrom the start\, the graveled road climbs Ward Pass 1145 m and descends into Isolated Flat – 250 hectares of expansive grass and tussock lands\, bounded by rolling mountains and massive scree slopes. Once at Red Gate\, the road loosely follows the Acheron River through to the historic Acheron Accommodation house and the confluence of the Acheron and Clarence rivers. From here we follow the Clarence to Jollies Pass – and from there into the North Canterbury town of Hanmer Springs – finishing at the Jollies Pass Hotel historic site on Jollies Pass Road: a total distance of 84 km.

Ideal for seasoned runners looking for a challenge with significant elevation gain and technical terrain.\n\n\n\n\nRun Mt Hutt – 12km \n\n\n\nDifficulty: Intermediate. Suited for runners looking to test themselves without the full ascent. \n\n\n\nDistance: 12km (6km ascent and 6km descent) \n\n\n\nStart Location: Awa Awa Rata Reserve \n\n\n\nRoute: Perfect for those looking for a shorter but still challenging run\, this route will take you halfway up the Mt Hutt road before returning to the reserve.
